All Nokia Smartphones Get Android 8.0 Oreo ๐Ÿ˜

In a tweet sent out over the weekend, HMD Global‘s chief product officer, Juho Sarvikas, confirmed that current Nokia smartphones will be receiving the Android 8.0 Oreo update. Sarvikas even committed to the budget Nokia 3 getting the update despite some delays in that device getting the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update.

The updated operating system should eventually hit the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and the Nokia 8. Sarvikas noted that he did not want to offer up timeframes or deadlines for the update to be ready for any particular Nokia device so that he would not “get into trouble” if HMD Global missed a deadline. However, Google included Nokia devices among those expected to deploy Android Oreo before the end of the year.

To help speed things along, one benefit HMD Global has is that they use a plain Android version on their devices. On the flipside, higher end Nokia devices use Qualcomm chips while the low-end Nokia 3 uses a MediaTek processor. That means HMD Global will have to prep a couple different versions of Android Oreo. Google has been working on compartmentalizing different aspects of their Android operating system to make it easier for manufacturers to rollout updates and keep devices on the latest version, so it will be interesting to see how HMD Global handles this with the different chipsets.
